Major in Business Administration

Overview

A major in Economics offer students the opportunity to blend the theoretical side of economics with real world issues. After a foundation in Principles of Economics, Intermediate Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, students proceed to take more specialised modules such as Statistics, International Economics and Econometrics. There are optional modules outside economics that students can take, making the economics programme truly multidisciplinary.
Bachelor of Business is based on a modular credit system, a combination of depth (specialisation of degree major) and breadth (general education modules beyond specialisation of degree major) where students have the flexibility of customising their degree programme depending on their preference and interest.
Students who major in economics shall begin to read those prescribed modules in their second semester. To be eligible for graduation, students have to acquire at least 140 modular credits and fulfilled specific requirement of the degree programme.


Program structure

The program structure for the Economics program is designed to provide students with a strong foundation and specialized skills required for excelling in the complex fields of economics. The curriculum is organized into several distinct components:

  • Degree Core Modules (12 MCs): Students begin their educational journey in the Bachelor of Business (Economics) with foundational courses such as Introduction to Economics, Principles of Business, and Principles of Economics. These initial modules are designed to establish a solid base in essential economic principles, setting the stage for more advanced exploration.

  • Major Core Modules (40 MCs): As students progress, they delve deeper into the field of economics with major core modules that include Macroeconomics: Principles and Issues, Intermediate Microeconomics, Intermediate Macroeconomics, and Applied Econometrics, among others. This comprehensive suite of courses ensures that students develop a robust understanding of both theoretical and applied economic concepts.

  • Major Options (20 MCs): The program allows students to tailor their academic experience by choosing from specialized modules in areas such as Economic Development, Public Sector Economics, and International Monetary Theory. These options enable students to focus on specific areas of interest, enhancing their expertise and preparing them for specialized career paths

  • Compulsory Breadth (20 MCs) and Breadth (16 Mcs): These components expand the educational scope beyond the core discipline of economics. Compulsory breadth modules include university-wide courses offered by other faculties, while additional breadth modules may cover diverse topics outside the business school, such as environmental studies or social sciences. This interdisciplinary approach is designed to enhance students’ adaptability and broaden their perspectives.

  • Discovery Year (32 MCs): A hallmark of the program, the Discovery Year offers students two semesters of practical experiences through opportunities like internships, community service projects, study abroad programs, or incubation projects. This year is pivotal in allowing students to apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world settings, which aids in personal growth and professional development.
