Major in Accounting and Finance


This major programme offers undergraduates the opportunity to attain a mix of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, starting from the Introduction to Accounting and Cost Accounting modules up to sophisticated modules such as Strategic Financial Management, Auditing and Advanced Management Accounting. Accounting and Finance modules are also offered to students taking the Master of Finance by research and Master of Islamic Finance by coursework. The aims of this major are to develop well-rounded accounting graduates with an international perspective, and to increase their level of professional expertise.

Bachelor of Business is based on a modular credit system, a combination of depth (specialisation of degree major) and breadth (general education modules beyond specialisation of degree major) where students have the flexibility of customising their degree programme depending on their preference and interest.

Students who major in accounting and finance shall begin to read those prescribed modules in their second semester. To be eligible for graduation, students have to acquire at least 140 modular credits and fulfilled specific requirement of the degree programme.

For students who are interested to pursue a career as a qualified Chartered Accountant through the ACCA (Association for Chartered Certified Accountants) qualification, graduating from the Accounting & Finance major programme may grant students exemptions of up to nine papers of the ACCA examination.

Eligibility to Major in Accounting and Finance

Students who wish to take a major in accounting and finance must have at least obtained 3.0 cGPA in Semester 1.


Degree Core (12 modular credits)

These are modules that must be taken by all students enrolled for the Bachelor of Business. Students must read and pass these modules (worth 4 modular credits each) in order to fulfil their graduation requirement.

  • BB-1104 Principles of Business & Management
  • BE-1101 Principles of Economics

Major Core (56 modular credits)

These are modules that are compulsory for all students registered in Major in Accounting and Finance. Students must read and pass these modules in order to fulfil their graduation requirement.


Major Option (4 modular credits)

These are non-compulsory major modules that contribute to the Major in Accounting and Finance, and count towards the depth requirements for graduation.


Compulsory Breadth (20 modular credits)

Similar to degree core modules, these are university-wide modules offered by another faculty which Business students must also read and pass in order to satisfy their graduation requirement.

  • LE-2503 Communication Skills II: Academic Report Writing and Presentation
  • PB-1503 Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB)
  • MS-1501 Islamic Civilization and the Modern World
  • A breadth module worth 4 modular credits, taken either from within the faculty or another faculty

Breadth (16 modular credits)

These are any module that is outside the degree and major. Any modules from another faculty are examples of breadth modules. Students reading the Bachelor of Business must acquire a minimum of 4 modular credits from the Science discipline – these breadth modules are available from the Faculty of Science, Institute of Health Science and Faculty of Integrated Technology.


Discovery Year (32 modular credits)

Students will undertake two semesters of discovery year activities outside the university, which comprise of 32 modular credits. More information is available here.
