OVERVIEW

The 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) is an academic research communication competition developed by The University of Queensland (UQ), Australia. It is a well-known competition in Australia and its popularity is growing in the academic world. The first 3MT was held at the University of Queensland in 2008, seeing 160 students competing. Since then, enthusiasm for the 3MT concept has grown and the competition has now been adopted in 65 countries outside Australia.

UBDSBE is registered with 3MT to use their competition materials to run and organise our own 3MT competition. UBDSBE organised its first 3MT competition in 2018.


AIMS & BENEFITS

Competitions that enhance the communication skills of students helps to fulfill our mission of enhancing quality education. In research programmes such as PhD programmes, students need to not only create new knowledge through original research, but also be able to convey their research to audiences. By effectively communicating their research, this will enhance their career prospects and attract collaborators in the development of their research field.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

PhD students in Business discipline from all higher education institutions in Brunei are invited to participate.

When registering, participants are required to submit a 300 word abstract. Abstract must include the following (if applicable*):
- Research background and significance to the research question
- Research strategy/design
- Results/Findings of the research*
- Conclusions, outcomes and impact of the research

REQUIREMENTS

Participants have three minutes to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance. 3MT is not an exercise in trivialising or ‘dumbing-down’ research, but challenges students to consolidate their ideas and research discoveries so they can be presented concisely to a non-specialist audience.

RULES

  • A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted (no slide transitions, animations or 'movement' of any description, the slide is to be presented from the beginning of the oration).
  • No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are permitted.
  • No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.
  • Presentations are limited to 3 minutes maximum and competitors exceeding 3 minutes are disqualified.
  • Presentations are to be spoken word (e.g. no poems, raps or songs).
  • Presentations are to commence from the stage.
  • Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their presentation through movement or speech.
  • The decision of the adjudicating panel is final.
